New York State Capitol Press Conference with ACT

ACT Access, the sponsors of A1709A/S1066A New York State Assemblymember Karines Reyes, New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer, and abortion medication access advocates, gathered to urge Assembly Speaker Heastie and Governor Hochul to join the Senate in passing A1709A/S1066A. This legislation provides the strongest possible protections to doctors, midwives, and other healthcare personnel who serve patients  in hostile states seeking abortion via telehealth. As states across the country restrict access to abortion, the New York Legislature has a moral responsibility to make every effort to assist women around the country seeking access to basic medical care. Medication abortion providers and supporters including the Coalition for Telemedicine Access, New York State Academy of Family Physicians, Medical Students for Choice, the Center for Reproductive Rights, Advocates for Youth, and Adirondack Voters for Change joined the rally.

Play Reading & Fireside Chat: "SPARE RIB"

A special night of theatre to support the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP), hosted by New York Rep at New World Stages, followed by a fireside chat with human rights attorney and reproductive rights advocate Julie F. Kay.

SPARE RIB follows two generations of abortion providers: Harriet, a member of the underground collective Jane in the early 1970’s, and Florynce, her daughter who is a contemporary abortion provider. The action rockets between three distinctive eras, early 1970’s, 30 years later and the present. Members of the cast play multiple roles as they time-bend and genre-bend, and, naturalism collides with surrealism

American Constitution Society 2022 National Convention

Plenary Session: “Evaporating Abortion Rights – Expanding Reproductive Freedom” with Michele Goodwin (Univ. of CA, Irvine), Julie F. Kay (Author and Human Rights Attorney), Erinn Martin (National Women’s Law Center) and Rosann Mariappuram (Janes Due Process).

The Supreme Court has been eroding meaningful abortion access for years, upholding Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws and other abortion restrictions that disproportionately impact marginalized pregnant people. Now the Court is poised to explicitly or de facto overturn Roe v. Wade and nearly 50 years of precedent recognizing the constitutional right to abortion. If this happens, according to the Guttmacher Institute, “26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion.” In a post-Roe America, how do we expand reproductive freedom in a way that creates meaningful rights and access for marginalized people in all 50 states? What can the experience of legalizing abortion in other countries tell us about potential next steps in the United States?
